If you suffer from Crohn's disease (an inflammation/infection of your digestive tract), your doctor may recommend Crohn's surgery. While these are particularly invasive, they are important options to consider when attempting to restore your quality of life. Without these surgeries, you may leave yourself at risk of even more serious inflammatory bowel disease and even certain forms of colon cancer.

The first option for Crohn's surgery, and the most well-known, is a partial bowel resection. In this case, the intestine has been damaged to the point where it needs to be removed, usually because of an obstruction. In most cases, the surgeon will remove the unhealthy portion and then reattach the healthy parts. However, if this cannot be done yet, an ostomy will be created temporarily, until reattachment can be done 6-8 weeks later. Repeat resections are sometimes necessary, as disease can occur above the resection point.

The second Crohn's surgery option is the strictureplasty. This is a procedure that opens up small strictures in the intestine. This can shorten the intestine, but it will widen the portion that was narrowed by the stricture.

Third, correcting fistulas can be done in a Crohn's surgery. If an infection is ravaging your intestines and fistulas are connecting the intestine to other organs, such as the bladder, these fistulas need to be closed to prevent the infection from leaking into other organs and causing serious problems.

Finally, Crohn's surgery may be required to drain abscesses. If an abscess is not responding to medical treatment, a surgery to drain it may be necessary. Generally this can be done with a needle, but sometimes the surgeon needs to expose the abscess surgically to remove the infectious material.

These surgeries can be expensive. However, if your Crohn's symptoms developed as a result of taking a medication such as Accutane, you may have legal recourse. Many lawsuits have been filed against Roche Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Accutane, as various intestinal diseases have been attributed as a Accutane side effects. If you suspect that your Crohn's disease has been caused by Accutane, call 877-739-7744 immediately to discuss receiving damages.

Drastic Treatment, Including Crohn's Surgery, Is Needed By Many Former Accutane Users

[Posted on April 19]

Accutane was available to patients from the early 1980s until 2009 and was used by an estimated 16 million people to treat severe acne. The makers of the drug, Roche Pharmaceuticals, pulled it from shelves in 2009 after the confirmation of studies that indicated users were putting themselves at a greater risk for inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease. This was also the time that the FDA issued a black box warning about Accutane which many believe left Roche Pharmaceuticals no choice but to stop ignoring the years of research that showed a correlation between their product and inflammatory bowel diseases. However, there is also a belief that the drug company could have acted sooner or at least warned patients of the growing evidence that showed they could be risking their long term health.

There is no cure for inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's. The earliest Crohns treatment could be as simple as a change in diet to foods that are more easily digested and possibly anti-inflammatory medicines. But as the Crohn's symptoms get worse, more drastic approaches will be taken to lessen the pain that the person is feeling. Often someone with this condition will need to undergo Crohn's surgery so that the damaged parts of their intestines can be removed. This procedure may have to repeated as needed.

Certainly dealing with the reality of their deteriorating quality of life is bad enough for these former Accutane users, but they're also left with bills for the extensive Crohns disease treatment they must undergo.  These individuals aren't able to completely focus on their health because they're constantly struggling to afford their Crohns treatment and Crohn's surgery. Roche Pharmaceuticals' failure to provide Accutane warnings sooner is being called negligent and that's why victims are taking legal action with an Accutane lawsuit.

When successful, an Accutane lawsuit against Roche Pharmaceuticals can lead to financial compensation which can then be applied to medical bills and other expenses. The Law Offices of Chandler, Mathis, & Zivley, PC, can provide information to you if you'd like to learn more about this kind of litigation. They have an experienced Accutane attorney you can speak with about your legal options. They offer a free legal consultation so you'll be able to get the information you need without feeling any pressure or obligation. You can get much needed help paying for your Crohn's surgery and other Crohns disease treatment.
